Complete Poems and Songs of Robert Burns (Collins Classics)
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (09 January, 1995)
Authors: Robert Burns, James Barke, and John Cairney
Average review score:

Comprehensive collection of his work
This book contains all Robert's poems, including epitaphs, plus all his song lyrics, but not the sheet music, because he did not compose any music. Of course, there is one song of his, Auld lang syne, which is extremely well known, although not many people are aware that he was its writer. This is not a biography, though some brief historical details are provided. If you want an in-depth biography, you must look elsewhere.

Robert Burns wrote about every topic you could imagine - love, nature, politics, people, anything that was topical in the late eighteenth century. Among the most famous poems are A red red rose (including the line Till a' the seas gang dry my dear), To a louse (including the line O wad the Power some giftie gie us) and To a mouse (including the line The best laid schemes o' mice and men).

The poems and songs are presented chronologically in the order of date written. Personally, I would have preferred the book divided into chapter, with each chapter covering a different theme, but it doesn't really matter. There is an index of first lines as well as an index of titles.

A glossary is provided to allow translation from Scottish to English. People sometimes joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by a common language, but this glossary is a reminder that the same can be said about Scotland and England. I cannot say how easy or difficult you will find the dialect. I was born of Scottish parents so I learned a bit as a child even though I was raised in England. Hopefully, you will most of it reasonably straightforward with a bit of practice. The quality of the poetry makes it well worth the effort.

Within the main book, at the bottom of each page, footnotes are provided to set the context of the poem or song where this is deemed useful. For example, Ballad of the American war has footnotes giving brief details of events between 1775 and 1784, so you will immediately realise that the poem doesn't just focus on the war itself, but also its aftermath.

Complete Works of William Shakespeare: The Alexander Text (Collins Classics)
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (April, 1997)
Authors: William Shakespeare, Peter Alexander, and Alexander Text
Average review score:

The Portable Bard
This is an edition of the complete works of Shakespeare that I keep next to my bed. No heavier than a large fashion magazine and absolutely readable, it is my favorite. The glossary is useful, the commentary is brief, and the cover folds back for comfortable beach reading. This edition brings Shakespeare into focus as an intimate whose work and life and suffering are not in any way distant from ours. Given the genius of the work, this particular edition encourages an easier relationship because the book itself is so easy to use.(When no one's around, pull it out and read a speech or two aloud) An excellent any-occasion gift that will be used and appreciated, especially by students, because it is so very convenient!

Computing Sis: A Guide to Tools & Techniques
Published in Paperback by Harrison Pub (August, 1998)
Author: Shawn Collins
Average review score:

An excellent source for In-Tech training
I work at a high school in North Georgia. Several members of our staff took an In-Tech training class this summer and reported being greatly confused. As I took Mr. Collins' class Summer 1999, I have recommended highly this book to several teachers to clear their confusion. The book goes through basic Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Access, and Html for example in a simple and easy to follow manner. Each section is an easy read and contains embedded print screens. The embedded print screens are examples from each program. These screens help users follow the instructions and visually check their progress as they work through the exercises. Basically if you are progressing through the exercises correctly, the screens will look familiar. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to gain basic understanding and experience using of any of the subjects covered by it.

Probably the last word on Browning.
I especially enjoyed Prof. Berry's pithy musings about railroads and breastmilk, a connection many of us have long pondered but have never dared utter.

Contemporary Composers
Published in Hardcover by St James Pr (January, 1992)
Authors: Brian Morton, Pamela Collins, and Gale Group
Average review score:

Best single source for contemporary composers
This is an encyclopedia of Contemporary Composers which politically correctly covers a lot of unbias international composers. (For instances, composers from Taiwan.) It also includes young talented composers. Every composers has good (1) biographical information (2) list of compositions and (3) an article about the composer. If this is only one book that I can get in this subject, I will choose this book, but not this first edition. The second edition was published by a different publisher. If you want to buy this book, you should go for the second edition.

The Convergence of Theology: A Festschrift Honoring Gerald O'Collins, S.J
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (May, 2001)
Authors: Gerald O'Collins, Stephen T. Davis, George Carey, and Daniel Kendall
Average review score:

THEOLOGICAL ENCOUNTER --TRIBUTE TO GERRY O'COLLINS
This 2001 collection of essays from 22 living theologians is a celebration of the 70th birthday of a pastoral human being who is a renowned transcontinental scholar of our times. It is obvious that Fr. O'Collins' deep faith in Jesus Christ has personally touched each writer as they participate in his enthusiastic search for truth. The book is a theological treasure that will find a warm welcome in global circles. While I did not receive any new insights, the work tied together numerous concepts that are fundamental to Christian theology. I would highly recommend this "Festschrift" for Adult Lifelong Learning groups as well as for College courses. For all who engage in "faith seeking understanding," it treats many topics that provide stimulating reflection and discussion. It leaves one immersed in an experience of a lived community of believers. Happy Birthday, Gerry!

Crash : Ten Easy Ways to Avoid a Computer Disaster
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (April, 2000)
Authors: Tony Collins and David Bicknell
Average review score:

Avoiding the Crash
In this book, Tony Collins spells out the finer points of project failures. He deals with the nitty gritty of some of the most expensive computer blunders made, both in the public and private sectors, in language that is easily understood and not full of techno jargon. This book is a must for anyone, customer or developer, thinking on embarking on a computer project. Tony lists what he calls the 10 deadly sins, and explains how each sin has contributed to a particular disaster. He reveals inside information on projects like the Wessex Health Authority catastrophe which cost the taxpayer over £60m, and how the government went on to reward those responsible. Like Fred Brooks' Mythical Man Month, this book should be compulsory reading in every college and university that teaches any computer related subjects. As a third year Compute Science student at Durham University, it certainly opened my eyes.

Crossing Boundaries: The Deployment of Global IT Solutions
Published in Paperback by Pinnaflex Educational Resources, Inc (11 March, 1999)
Authors: Ph. D. Rosann Webb Collins and Ph.D. Laurie J. Kirsch
Average review score:

Must reading for IT PMs & consultants in global companies
This is am important work for anyone responsible for rolling out large-scale systems on a global or local scale. The book's tone is somewhat academic, but the issues and factors that it addresses unquestionably applies to real-world challenges.

The two parts I liked most are chapter 4 (crossing cultural boundaries) and chapter 8 (deployment timelines). The cultural boundary issue addressed in chapter 4 can also be applied to corporate culture as well as national and ethnic cultural boundaries, and the information provided in invaluable for anyone who works in the global domain or is a consultant who has to adjust to each new client. Getting past the culture and internal politics is a fact of life and not addressed in most books to the degree it is in this one.

Chapter 8's treatment of deployment timelines is an excellent resource for project managers. The associated checklists provided in chapter 9 are especially valuable as well.

Overall, this book is a valuable addition to the scant body of knowledge on deploying large-scale systems and solutions, and is must reading for anyone who works with global companies as an IT project manager or member of a global project team.
